Q

Semen Production

A

Male gonads are called testes.
• Testes make sperm & the male sex hormone testosterone.
• Testes hang outside of the body wall in a sac called the scrotum. This keeps the testes at a
temperature slightly lower than the rest of the body which is necessary for the production
and storage of sperm.
• Each testis is made up of 300-600 small coiled tubes called seminiferous tubules that
make immature sperm.
• Immature sperm pass to the epididymis where they are stored for 18 hours as they mature.
• Mature sperm leaves the epididymis through the vas deferens that leads upward into the
lower abdomen where they empty into the urethra.
• As sperm enters the urethra, the seminal vesicles, cowper’s gland and prostate gland all secrete fluids into the urethra that nourish and protect the sperm from the acidity of the female reproductive tract.
• This mixture of sperm and fluids is called semen.
