Digestive System Flashcards
Role of digestive system
The digestive system is responsible for breaking down food into smaller components
Absorbing nutrients from food that are necessary for growth & maintenance
Two digestion processes
Mechanical digestion & chemical digestion
Mechanical digestion
Chewing
Chemical digestion
Chemical reaction in cells aided by enzymes which brake down substances
Mouth 1
Teeth brake down food then saliva with enzymes chemically brakes it down
Esophagus 2
Chewed food is forced down the esophagus by swallowing
Stomach 3
Stomach muscles mechanically twist and turn contents while enzymes continue brake it down. (Can hold 2 litres of food at a time)
Small intestine 4
Large surface area most digestion takes place here. Digestion is completed here.
Large intestine 5.1
Also known as colon where large un digested waste passes through
Anus
Remaining solid waste is expelled
