Ectopic Pregnancies
fertilized egg grows outside of uterus, typically in the fallopian tubes and occurs within 3% of pregnancies
can be life threatening
typically found in weeks 4-12
Risk Factors for Ectopic Pregnancy
history of PID and ectopic pregnancy current progestin releasing IUD progestin only BC prior pelvic or tubal surgery procedures used in infertility treatment
CM of Ectopic Pregnancies
ab or pelvic pain irregular periods missed periods pain radiating to shoulder and back urge to poo or pee occasionally fever
Diagnostics of Ectopic Pregnancies
serum pregnancy test
absence of normal intruterine pregnancy means prob spontaneous abortion or ectopic if it has high beta hCG
beta hCG and vaginal US are used
CBC
Tx of Ectopic Pregnancies
surgery to remove fetus and may need a removal of a fallopian tube if it ruptures
monitoring bleeding, pain, blood tests, and vitals
pain meds
methotrexate to stop cells of the fertilized egg from growing
Rh D immunoglobin for those who are Rh-ve to prevent an immune response to Rh+ve blood
conservation surgical approach limits damage to the reproductive system
