Reproductive Histology - Wright Flashcards
Ovaries covered by ____ which is really just modified peritoneum
Germinal epithelium
________: dense irregular collagenous CT, lies deep to surface epithelium
Tunica albuginea
_____ : high cellular CT, contains ovarian follicles
Cortex
simple columnar epithelium made of 2 cells:
peg cells : non-ciliated, secrete pdts that facilitate capacitation of sperm, provide nutrients / protection to ovum
ciliated cells: ciliated, beat to move ovum along uteran tube
3 Regions of Uterus
Upper part: Fundus
Middle: Body
Lower: Cervix
Coverings of Testis:
Tunica Vaginalis -> tunica albuginea
Seminiferous tubules: walls composed of…
Tunica Propria: Connective tissue
Seminiferous (germinal epithelium)
Sertoli cells importance:
linked to each other by tight junctions and surround the sperm. They protect testis from antigens / antibodies against sperm.
2 compartments: basal compartment, adluminal compartment
Sertoli cells role:
provide physical / nutritional support to developing germ cells
Phagocytose cytoplasm eliminated during spermiogenesis
establish a blood-testis barrier by zonulae occludentes
synthesize androgen-binding protein (ABP): facilitates role of testosterone
Synthesize antimullerian hormone: suppresses female structure formation
Synthesize inhibin, which inhibits FSH secretion by pituitary
tubuli recti
short straight ducts which link seminiferous tubules to rete testis
seminiferous tubules -> vas deferens
whats inbetween
seminiferous tubules -> straight tubules -> Rete testis -> efferent ductules -> epididymis -> vas deferens
after vas deferens:
Ejaculatory duct: formed by joining of ductus deferens
drains to urethra
Seminal vesicles
Ducts of seminiferous vesicles and vas deferens combine as you go into prostate
Bulbourethral glands (cowper’s glands)
two small glands located near root of penis
secrete thick, slippery fluid that serves as lubricant
3 columns of erectile tissue of penis:
2 corpora cavernosa
1 corpus spongiosum
a tunica albuginea
