17
Q

What is an Ovule?

A

Female part of the flower which becomes the seed of the fruit.

18
Q

What is a Stigma?

A

Female part of the flower above the Style where pollen grains are brought or stuck on its sticky surface so that it can go down into the style.

19
Q

What is a Style?

A

Female part of the flower which is a tube that goes down to the ovary.

20
Q

What is Pollination?

A

Transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of a flower.

21
Q

What are the agents of Pollination?

A

Birds, bees, humans, wind, water, insects and other animals.

22
Q

What is Self-pollination?

A

Transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of the sane flower and flowers belonging to the same plant.

23
Q

What is Cross-Pollination?

A

Transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of different flowers of the same species.

24
Q

What is fertilization?

A

The fusion of a male and female sex cells.

25
Q

What is a zygote?

A

A fertilized egg.

26
Q

What is the process of fertilization?

A
  1. Pollen tube goes down to style and penetrates egg.
  2. Two male nuclei pass down pollen tube into the embryo.
  3. One nucleus fuses with nucleus in ovule to form a zygote.
  4. Zygote divides and develops into embryo which eventually becomes a new plant.
27
Q

What are the five differences between a wind and insect pollinated flower?

A

Wind Pollinated Flower:
1. Flowers don’t have scent.
2. Has dull colours.
3. Filament is thin and hang outside.
4. Pollen grains are light and numerous in amount.
5. Stigma is feathery to catch pollen and hang outside.
Insect Pollinated Flower:
1. Flowers have a scent.
2. Has brightly coloured petals.
3. Filament is strong and inside.
4. Pollen grains are sticky and are few in amount.
5. Stigma is hairy and sticky and is inside.

28
Q

What is Germination?

A

When a seed starts to grow into a new plant.

29
Q

What are the parts of a seed?

A

Plumule, Testa, Radicle, Hilum, Cotyledon and Microhpyle.

30
Q

What is the function of the Plumule?

A

The developing shoot.

31
Q

What is the function of the Testa or seed coat?

A

For protection.

32
Q

What is the function of the Radicle?

A

Develops into the root system.

33
Q

What is the function of the Cotyledon?

A

Stored food.

34
Q

What is the function of the Microphyle?

A

Small hole where pollen tube was attatched to ovule. Absorbs water during germination

35
Q

What is the function of the Hilum or seed scar?

A

Points where seed was attatched in the pod.

36
Q

What is Asexual reproduction in plants?

A

Refers to the propagation of plants by means of vegetative parts and does not involve gametes.(sex cells)

37
Q

What is the Natural method?

A

The natural method of plant propagation refers to techniques and processes that occur in nature without human intervention.

38
Q

Examples of the Natural methods:

A

Rhizomes-Bamboo, tumerick, ginger
Tubers- Yam, cassava, potatoe
Runners- berries, cucumber, citrus fruits
Bulbs- Onion, garlic, broccoli
Corm corm- dasheen, banana, oats
suckers.

39
Q

What is the Artificial method?

A

The artificial method of plant propagation refers to techniques and processes that are deliberately carried out by humans to reproduce plants asexually.

40
Q

Examples of the Artificial methods:

A

Layering, culting, grafting, stem cutting, macoting and tissue cutting.
