Reproduction Flashcards
What us the acrosome reaction?
Triggered by sperm contacting oocyte
ZP3 protein on oocyte membrane prevents cross species fertilisation
ACROSOME releases HYALURONIDASE & ACROSIN enzymes, break through egg coating (oocyte activated).
What happens once oocytes are activated?
CORTICAL GRANULES are released & cause oocyte membrane to become impermeable to other sperm.
What is capacitation?
In the uterus heparin & other enzymes remove cholesterol & glycoproteins from sperm cell surface
Calcium influx results
Hyperactivity of sperm –> increased motility.
When does the proliferative phase occur and what happens?
Day 5-13
Endometrium proliferates, glands & arteries form.
Progesterone receptor synthesis stimulated in ENDOMETRIAL CELLS.
When does the late proliferative phase occur and what happens?
Gland are long due to growth
Stroma becomes oedematous.
What occurs during the secretory phase?
Growing endometrium dependent on progesterone released from CL
tubular glands enlarge and secrete mucus and glycogen to prepare for implantation of fertilized ovum.m
How do primary locate numbers change?
Before birth –> 7 mn eggs
At birth = 2 mn
Puberty = 0.4 mn
Menopause = less than 1000’
When does a blastocyst form?
After 5 days when zygote reaches uterus.
