What are gonads?

Location of spermatogenesis.
What is capacitation?
Enzyme release that readies the sperm for passage through the cervical mucus and into the uterus.
What is the vas deferens?
Extension of the epididymis with thick muscular walls.
What is a vasectomy?
Clamping of the vas deferens that does not allow sperm to exit the body.
What is the ejaculatory duct?
Extension of vas deferens that passes through the prostate.
What is the urethra?
Final path of both semen and urine.
What is the prostate?
Tubuloalveolar gland that is shaped like a donut.
What is the scrotum?
Skin pouch that protects the reproductive organs.
What is the penis?
Major reproductive component of the male anatomy.
What is the glans penis?
Bulging structure at the tip.
What is the prepuce?
Foreskin.
What is oligospermia?
Decreased sperm production.
What is cryptorchidism?
Newborns born with undescended testes.
What is benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH)?
Enlarged prostate.
What is phimosis?
Foreskin is so tight that the glans cannot retract.
What is erectile dysfunction?
Inability to achieve an erection.
Caused by anxiety, depression, and stress; occurs most often in men over 65.
What causes oligospermia?
Infection, fever, radiation, malnutrition, and erectile dysfunction.
What is the perineum?
Skin covered muscular region between vaginal orifice and the anus.
What is an episiotomy?
Surgical incision to prevent tearing during childbirth.
What are ovaries?
Create eggs.
What is oogenesis?
Egg production.
What is ovulation?
Release of an ovum.
What is the endometrium?
Exocrine glands that secrete mucus.
What is the myometrium?
Muscular layer that contracts during delivery.
What is the parietal peritoneum?
Exterior lining.
What are uterine tubes (fallopian)?
Connect ovaries and uterus.
What is a kegel exercise?
Series of voluntary contractions of the pelvic floor and perineum.
What is the hymen?
Border around external that partially blocks the orifice.
What is the mon pubis?
Pad of fat over symphysis pubis.
What is the vulva?
Female external genitalia.
What are labia majora?
Large lips.
What are labia minora?
Small lips.
What is the vestibule?
Area between the labia minora.
What is the clitoris?
Erectile tissue that is the same as the glans penis in males.
What is the urinary meatus?
Another name for urethra.
What is the vaginal orifice?
Opening of the vagina.
What is the areola?
Circular, pigmented area surrounding each nipple that contains sebaceous glands that produce sebum as lubrication during periods of nursing.
What is infertility?
Failure to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse.
What is PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)?
Results in numerous endocrine abnormality and infrequent menstrual cycles and anovulation.
What is endometriosis?
Misplaced endometrial tissue.
What is a lumpectomy?
Simple removal of cancerous lump.
What is a mastectomy?
Removal of entire breast.
What are the 3 layers of the wall of the uterus?
Endometrium, myometrium, parietal peritoneum.
