Reproduction Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction?
The process includes the fusion of the nuclei of 2 gametes to form a zygote (Fertilised egg cell) and the production of offspring that are genetically different from eachother
How are gametes produced?
Through Meiosis
Are offspring produced by sexual reproduction genetically different or same?
Genetically different
Is sexual reproduction a quick or slow process?
Slow
What is asexual reproduction?
The process of making identical offspring being produced from 1 parent
Does asexual reproduciton require gametes or fertilisation?
No
Are offspring produced by asexual reproduction genetically different or same?
Same
What are gametes?
They are sex cells produced by meiosis
How many chromosomes are in each gamete?
23 in the sperm cell
23 in the egg cell
What is the adaption of the sperm cell to improve chances of successful fertilisation
Sperm cells have a tail that helps propel them toward the egg, they also have mitochondria which help them produce and store energy
What is the adaptation of the egg cell to improve chances of successful fertilisation
Egg cells have energy stores within the cytoplasm which enable and support early embryo development
How can you define fertilisation?
The fusion of male and female gametes to produce a zygote
What does a zygote do?
It divides by mitosis to develop into an embryo
