Feeding relationships Flashcards
What are trophic levels?
Feeding relations between organisms
How can you define a producer?
They produce their own organic nutrients from (usually) sunlight. You will find these at the bottom of the trophic levels and are mostly green plants.
How can you define a primary consumer?
Herbivores- Eats the producers and gets eaten by the secondary consumers
How can you define a secondary consumer?
Predators (Omnivores or Carnivores) that feed on primary consumers. Gets eaten by the tertiary consumers
How can you define a tertiary consumer?
Predators that feed on secondary consumers. They are usually at the top of the food chain.
How can you define a decomposer?
Bacteria or Fungi that get their energy off feeding on dead, dedcaying organisms and undigested waste (Faeces) . They secrete enzymes to break them down.
How can you calculate the efficiency of biomass transfer from a lower trophic level to a higher one?
Precentage efficiency transfer: Biomass in higher trophic level/ Biomass in lower level X 100
How do producers create their own biomass?
Producers use glucose (made during respiration) to produce their own biomass
How does a primary consumer eating a producer increase its biomass?
They break down the biomass of the consumer through digestion and use the chemical energy to increase or sustain their own biomass
As chemical energy is transferred___________
Biomass is also transferred
Approximately how much energy is transferred on to the next trophic level?
10%
