Reproduction Flashcards
what are the two types of reproduction
sexual and asexual reproduction
how many parents does asexual reproduction have?
one parent
how do the cells divide in asexual reproduction
mitosis
what is the problem with asexual reproduction
there is no variation
what does asexual reproduction produce
clones (genetically identical to the parents)
give examples of things that reproduce asexually
- plants
- fungi
- body cells
in sexual reproduction how many gametes are there?
two - a male and a female
what do the gametes do in sexual reproduction
the gametes fuse to form a zygote
what cell division forms gametes?
meiosis
each gamete has how many chromosomes
half of the full number
(in humans, that is 23)
what are the gametes in plants
egg cells
pollen
what is good about sexual reproduction
it has variation which is important for long term survival
describe the meiosis process
1.genetic information is copied so there are four sets of chromosomes
2. cells divide twice to form four gametes
what is a haploid
a cell with half the number of chromosomes
(HAP=HALF)
what is a diploid
a cell with the full set of chromosomes
what are alleles
different forms of the same gene
what is the structure of DNA
double-helix structure
what are genes
sections of dna that code for protein
what is homozygote
the same alleles for a characteristic
what is heterozygote
different alleles for the same characteristic
dominant alleles
that is the allele that we see
recessive alleles
we only see this if BOTH of the alleles are recessive
what are the sex chromosomes for girls
XX
what are the sex chromosomes for boys
XY
