Where does external fertilisation occur?
It occurs outside the female.

The male releases sperm as the female releases her eggs in the water.

It occurs inside the female.
How does internal fertilisation occur?
The male ejaculates a fluid called semen containing sperm into the female.
What is the function of the testes?
To produce the male sex cells.
What is the function of the scrotum?
To hold and support the testes.
What is the function of the epididymis?
To store the male sex cells.
What is the function of the sperm duct?
To transport sperm from the testes to the penis.
What is the function of the prostate gland and the seminal vesicle?
To add fluid to the sperm to create semen.
What is the function of the urethra?
Semen leaves the penis through the urethra.
What are the functions of the penis?
Firstly, to pass urine out of the man’s body. Secondly, to pass semen into the woman’s vagina.
What is the function of the vulva?
This is the outermost part of the female reproductive system where the urethra is found.
What is the function of the vagina?
This is a muscular tube which that leads from the cervix to the outside of the woman’s body.
What is the function of the cervix?
To keep the baby in place while the woman is pregnant.
What is the function of the womb/uterus?
This is where the zygote is developed.
What is the function of the oviduct?
It is a tube through which an egg passes from an ovary.
What is the function of the ovary?
This is where the unfertilised eggs are stored.
What is the menstrual cycle?
The process in which the uterus lining thickens to receive a fertilised egg.
How long does the menstrual cycle last?
28-35 days.
For how long is the uterus’ lining shed?
It is shed for the first six days.
For how long does ovulation occur?
For three days (around the 13th day to the 16th day).
For how long does the womb lining continue to thicken?
From around the 16th day to the last day.
What is fertilisation?
The fusing of the male gamete and the female gamete to form a zygote.
What is a zygote?
A zygote is a fertilised egg.
