Human Systems Flashcards
What is the circulatory system?
The system that transports important materials around the body.
What does the circulatory system consist of?
The heart, blood vessels and blood.
Oxygen is in our blood. What happens to it? Where does it go?
Containing oxygen, blood is pumped around the body to each cell, where the oxygen is dropped off and used for respiration.
What does blood do with carbon dioxide?
It picks it up from the cells as a waste product and is taken back to the alveoli.
What are the alveoli?
Air sacs.
What is the function of the trachea?
It is the windpipe - it leads from the nose and mouth to the two bronchi.
What is the function of the bronchi?
It is the tube leading from the trachea to the lungs (one lung each).
What is the function of the lungs?
To contain the gas exchange surfaces.
What is the function of the bronchioles?
These are smaller tubes inside the lungs leading from the bronchi to the alveoli.
What is the function of the alveoli?
These are tiny air sacs at the end of bronchioles where gas exchange happens.
What is the function of the ribs?
To provide a moveable cage to enclose and protect the lungs.
What is the function of the intercostal muscles?
To allow the ribcage to change in volume for ventilation to happen.
What is the function of the diaphragm?
This works with the intercostal muscles to allow ventilation to happen.
How does gas get from inside the alveoli to the blood stream?
Diffusion.
Describe three ways alveoli are adapted well for gaseous exchange.
They have a large surface area, thin walls and a good blood supply.
