Life Processes and Cells Flashcards
Expand the term ‘MRS GREN’.
Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion and nutrition.
List the parts of an animal cell.
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes and mitochondria.
List the parts of a plant cell.
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes, mitochondria, cell wall, chloroplast and vacuole.
What is the function of the nucleus in a cell?
It contains the DNA of the organism.
What is the function of the cell membrane in a cell?
It controls what enters and exits the cell.
What is the function of the cytoplasm in a cell?
It is the jelly-like fluid where the organelles are suspended. Lots of reactions take place in the cytoplasm.
What is the function of the ribosomes in a cell?
To create proteins.
What is the function of the mitochondria in a cell?
To make energy. It is the powerhouse of the cell.
What is the function of the cell wall in a cell?
To give structure and support to the plant.
What is the function of the vacuole in a cell?
To store food and water (sap).
What is the function of the chloroplast in a cell?
This is where photosynthesis takes place.
What is the function of the eyepiece lens in a microscope? What is its usual magnification?
This is the lens closest to your eye. It usually has a magnification of 10x.
What is the function of an objective lens in a microscope?
There are three lenses of different strengths which can be used to magnify the image more clearly.
What is the function of the stage in a microscope? What is the function of the clips?
This is the place where you put a microscope slide. Clips hold the slide in place.
What is the function of the diaphragm in a microscope?
This controls the amount of light that goes onto the slide.
