Reproduction Flashcards
What is Sexual reproduction?
It involves the fusion of male and female gametes. The offspring will get a mix of both genes.
What is ASexual Reproduction?
It takes place with only 1 parent, it does not involve gametes. No genetic variation. All offspring are identical clones. Mitosis. Either mitosis or binary fission is used.
What are gametes?
Gametes are sex cells. They are like sperm and egg cells. or pollen and eggs. They only have half the genetic material of a normal cell, 23 chromosomes.
What is an advantage of Asexual reproduction?
Only 1 parent is needed
Parents are very quick.
What is an advantage of Sexual reproduction?
Genetic Variation
Some individual may be less prone to diseases
Population can adapt to changing conditions
Evolution)
How does sexual reproduction occur?
The sperm ducts carry sperm from the tests to the urethra. The sperms contain semen that helps carry the sperm into the female reproductive system. The female gametes are released from the ovaries from ovulation. During the menstrual cycle, ovulation occurs. The egg goes down the fallopian tube and goes to the uterus (womb). Semen is ejected into the vagina. In the sperm reaches the egg. Fertilization will occur.
What happens in fertilization?
Cells will continue to divide to form strucutres in the embryo and placentas. After fertilization is gestation for 32 =48 weeks.
What is the placenta?
the placenta is an organ where the exchange of nutrients and air between the mother and the embryo occurs. they pass from the mom’s blood to the embryo’s blood thru the placenta. Using blood vessels in the umbilical cord. After 8 weeks, the embryo is known as a fetus, it has all organs.
What is the menstrual cycle?
Women between the age of 12 and 50 years old undergo a monthly cycle in which their uterus prepares for pregnancy. the menstrual cycle occurs for 28 days.
What is menstruation?
The first stage of the menstrual cycle. it occurs if the egg has not to be fertilized. Known as a period. Happens between 3-7 days. Blood is lost through the vaginal canal.
What is ovulation?
The second stage is where the woman is most fertile. The uterus thickens again, a follicle develops in the ovary. An egg is released 14 days into the cycle. This is when fertilization could take place. If the egg is fertilized. the lining does not occur and the women is pregnant.
What 2 hormones control the menstrual cycle?
Oestrogen and Progesterone.
What are Oestrogen and Progesterone used for?
Oestrogen is produced in the ovary and it causes the uterus lining the thicken after men’s saturation. Levels are high in the middle of pregnancy.
Progesterone is produced by the empty follicle in the ovary. It is dropped off the if the gg is unfertilized. Progesterone levels are highest in the second half of pregnancy.
How may plants species are known to science?
390,000
What are the sexual reproductive organs in plants?
Pollen and Ovaries
