Repro (Misc) Flashcards
What is a varicocele?
A varicocele is a widening of the veins along the cord that holds up a man’s testicles (spermatic cord)
List the veins encountered, from the Right ovary/testis, to the IVC.
Right ovary/testis –> right gonadal vein –> IVC
List the veins encountered, from the *Left *ovary/testis, to the IVC.
Left ovary/testis –> left Gonadal vein –> left Renal vein –> IVC
*(Remember [L for Long]. Longer path from Left nut to IVC, than from Right nut to IVC.)
Lymph from the uterus and Proximal 2/3 **vagina **drain to the ____ nodes
hypogastric, external iliac, obturator
Lymph from the vulva, scrotum, and Distal 1/3 vagina, drain to the ____ nodes.
superficial inguinal nodes
Lymph from the Ovaries/testes drain to the ____ lymph nodes.
para-aortic lymph nodes
Why is a varicocele more common on the left side?
Left gonadal vein enters renal vein at 90º angle. So left venous pressure > right venous pressure => So varicocele is more common on the left [spermatic cord]
Varicocele is more common on the [right/left] side
left
The hypogastric lymph nodes are AKA:
internal iliac lymph nodes
Where in the body is Progesterone made?
in the ovaries (by the corpus luteum),
the adrenal glands, and,
during pregnancy, in the placenta.
What do the interstitial cells of Leydig make?
testosterone
Where in the body is Estrogen made?
granulosa cells of the ovary.
Some estrogens are also produced in smaller amounts in the liver, adrenal glands, and the breasts. (These secondary sources of estrogens are especially important in postmenopausal women.) Fat cells produce estrogen as well.
