How are MPS conflicted regionally and nationally?
A MP near an airport may be under pressure to oppose its expansion locally cos of noise and pollution but it may be in the national interest to expand
How do MPs represent their constituents?
Represnt the whole constituency - Funding for local services
Represnet the individual - a redress of grievances e.g someone who feels they have been treated unfairly by NHS waiting lists etc.
Listen to views of residents when deciding on a national issue
Who else do eleted representative represent?
Their political party
A occupational or social group e.g trade unions, the elderly, LGBTQplus, low income groups
What is the representation of ideas, causes and oinciples?
Causal representation e.g. environment, equality, animal rights
How is most causal representation carried out?
Through pressure groups
What are the different levels of representation throughout the UK?
Parish council - lowest level - parks, gardens. parking
Local council - education, transport, roads, public health, social services
Combined authorities - 2 or more councils - e.g Greater Manchester
Metropolitan authorities - London - deal with policing, planning, arts, environment
Devolved govt - Wales and Scotland, Nothern Ireland - elected representation
National govy - Westminster parl and the UK govt
