the way groups places and issues are portrayed by the media
what is a dominant representation
the representation which dominates the media because it is most commonly shown. usually benefits those in power.
what is an alternative representation
a representation which opposes the dominant representation, challenging the cultural myths which preserve power.

what is stereotype theory
simplified, generalised understandings of groups of people based on shallow characteristics, created by those in power to benefit them. hall says all of them are negative for this reason.
gender binary theory
van zoonen is critical of gender binary. states that represenatation of women are weak, domestic, passive objects. reps of men are strong, public, active subjects. This binary serves the patriarchy by preserving mens power, discouraging women from claiming it.
