reception theory
hall says that audiences respond differently to texts because we interpret meaning through a filter of our experiences, values and beliefs. therefore meaning is a combination of text and interpretation. Preferred reading is aligned with the producers intention, oppositional opposes it. negotiated is a mix of both.
uses and gratifications
blumler and katz say all audiences are active because they choose media that satifises their needs. these needs are escapism, information, identity and relationships.
passive audience theory
this is the idea that audiences passively consume media and subconsciously take in its ideologies, so we have the ideology which is most dominant across the media. HOWEVER, there are many confliciting ideologies accross media so this isnt harmful.
cultivation theory
over time we are manipulated into a world view which we accept, whether we believe it or not, we cannot see another way which the world could be. HOWEVER, this theory allows for new ideology to be cultivated.
identity theory
audiences use media to understand your place in the world- this is why it’s important that there is GOOD representation of everyone, not just representation. theorised by gauntlet.
