Q

What is the hydroelectric power method?

A

It is where it usually requires the flooding of a valley by building a big dam and rainwater gets caught and allowed out through the turbines to the generator to create electricity

Q

Name disadvantages of using hydroelectric power to generate electricity?

A

1) Big impact on the environment due to flooding of the valley
2) Loss of habitats for animals
3) Rotting vegetation causes methane and CO2 to be released

Q

What is the Tidal method?

A

It is where big dams are built across river estuaries with turbines in them and as the tide come in it fills up the estuary to a height of several metres- it drives the turbines to create electricity.

Q

What is the Wave power method?

A

Waves move up and down which drives air past the turbine to get them spinning and this produces electricity due to the up and down motion driving a generator

Q

What is the Geothermal method to generate electricity?

A

Built near volcanic areas to pump cold water down a pipe where hot rocks are then it converts it into steam and that drives the turbines which create electricity.

16
Q

What is an advantage of using solar cells?

A

No polluting gases

17
Q

What is a disadvantage of using solar cells?

A

Not very reliable because you can only use them during the day time.

18
Q

What is the wind turbine method?

A

Use wind to generate electricity as the wind spines the turbines.

19
Q

Give 3 advantage of using wind turbines?

A

1) No polluting gases
2) Electricity is produced
3) No fuel costs

20
Q

Give a disadvantage for using wind turbines?

A

It is not always windy to turn the turbines
