renewable energy Flashcards
what is electricity, and how is it generated?
electricity is generated from an original source, such as the sun, chemical, or movement
what is electrical energy?
electrical energy is distributed through power lines and originates from electricity.
define renewable energy sources
renewable energy sources are sustainable, meaning they will never run out and can be used to generate electricity forever
define non-renewable energy sources
non-renewable energy sources are non-sustainable, meaning the resources needed are limited and will eventually run out
how is electricity generated through hydroelectricity?
water falls over a dam, moving large generators that produce electricity
how does solar energy work?
the sun shines on a photovoltaic cell, which converts light into electricity
how does wind energy generate electricity?
wind blows, turning a large fan turbine that powers an electrical generator
what is biomass energy
biomass is plant-based material burned to produce heat or electricity
how does geothermal energy work?
steam from deep in earths core turns a turbine which activates a generator and produces electricity
what is tidal energy?
as tidal water rises and falls, it turns a turbine to generate electricity. this can only occur in oceans with significant tides
how do fossil fuels generate electricity?
a substance like oil, natural gas, or coal is burned to heat water. the resulting steam drives electricity to generators.
how is electricity generated through nuclear power?
uranium atoms split releasing heat. the heat boils water, and the steam drives electrical generators.
