electrical circuits Flashcards
what is current electricity?
current electricity is the flow of electrons through a conductor
define an electrical circuit.
an electrical circuit is a path for electrons to flow from and return to an energy source
in which direction do electrons flow in a circuit?
electrons flow in one direction negative to positive
what is the purpose of the energy source in a circuit?
it provides the flow of electrons for the circuit
ex: battery, wall outlet
what are connecting wires made out of and why?
connecting wires are made out conductors to give a path for electrons and are either made of plastic or rubber
what is the purpose of a controlled device in a circuit?
it can start or stop the flow of electrons Ex: switch
what is the purpose of a load in a circuit
any device that changes electrical energy into a new form Ex: light or heat
define an open circuit
a circuit that has gaps or breaks in it where electrons are not flowing
define an closed circuit
a circuit that has no gaps or breaks where electrons can flow freely
why are circuit diagrams useful?
they use symbols as a universal language so everyone around the world can understand.
