Indication:
Urinary antispasmodics
To treat overactive bladder and incontinence.
Generic names:
Urinary antispasmodics
- solifenacin
- tolterodine
- oxybutynin
Side effects and nursing considerations:
Urinary antispasmodics
Anticholinergic side effects (use caution if taking other anticholinergic meds):
- causes blurry vision - implement safety / fall precautions
- causes urinary retention - monitor intake and output
- causes dry mouth - give candy or ice chips
- causes constipation - encourage fluids/fiber/walking
“can’t see, can’t pee, can’t spit, can’t shit”
Generic names:
Female contraceptives
- ethinyl estradiol/norgestimate (the pill)
- ethinyl estradiol/etonogestrel (vagina ring)
- medroxyprogesterone (IM injectible)
Most common side effects and nursing considerations:
Female contraceptives
Increases risk of blood clots and hypertension.
Teach to avoid smoking.
Generic names:
Erectile dysfunction drugs
sildenafil, tadalafil
Most common side effects and nursing considerations:
Erectile dysfunction drugs
- Vasodilator
- Can cause severe hypotension
- use caution when taking meds that decrease blood pressure
- don’t take with nitroglycerin
Mechanism of action:

Relaxes smooth muscles of bladder.

Female contraceptives
Estrogen and progestin stops ovulation.
