Renal replacement therapy Flashcards
What does CAPD stand for?
Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis.
CAPD
C-It is continous- 24 hours a day.
A-Ambulatory- meaning the patient can move about during treatment.
P-It involves inserting isotonic fluid into the peritoneal cavity.
D- it is a type of dialysis.
How many cycles of CAPD would a patient typically completed in a day?
4-6 cycles. Cycles can last between 3-10 hours.
How long does changing dialysis fluid take in CAPD?
About 20 minutes.
What does CCPD stand for?
Continuous Cycler-assisted Peritoneal Dialysis.
CCPD uses a machine to automatically make fluid changes. This normally occurs at night.
CCPD is also known as?
APD (automated peritoneal dialysis).
How long do CCPD sessions typically last?
8-10 hours.
Haemodialysis sessions typically last how long?
3-5 hours.
How many times a week do haemodialysis patients require treatment?
2-3 times a week.
Where is blood taken from and where is it returned to in haemodialysis?
An artery, and returned to a vein.
Haemodialysis patients are limited to fluid intake equal to the previous day’s output, plus approximately how much?
500ml.
Whilst patients with ERF can receive treatment in the form of CAPD, CCPD or HD (haemodialysis), what kidney function do these treatments fail to replace?
The kidney’s endocrine functions.
