Renal Function Tests - Rao Flashcards
What is mass flow?
Expression of solute movement as a function of time
Mass flow =
concentration x volume flow, equalling amount per minute
How do you measure mass flow in the kidney?
Arterial Intake = output to veins, lymph, urine
Plasma concentration of X=
intake/output
Rate of inulin filtration would be equal to
GFR x plasma concentration of inulin
Clearance formula for anything
(UF*[U])/[P]
What is the extraction ratio?
Percent of substance removed from the plasma
What does reabsorption do to the extraction ratio?
Lower
What does secretion do to the extraction ratio?
Raise
What is the extraction ratio formula?
= (A-V)/A, basically comparing arterial and venous differences
What substance is used to measure RPF?
PAH, because it is cleared almost completely in 1 pass since it is secreted in addition to being filtered
What is the relationship between plasma creatinine and GFR?
It is NOT linear; it is logarithmic
Explain what happens to plasma inulin, creatinine clearance in a uninephrectomy
GFR drops in half. Plasma inulin concentration doubles but the amount of inulin excreted into urine per unit time stays the same.
