RENAL FUNCTION Flashcards
Basic structural and functional unit of the kidney
NEPHRON
— 1-1.5 million nephrons per kidney
— consists of glomerulus and renal tubules
Order of urine formation
- Glomerulus
- PCT
- Loop of Henle
- DCT
- Collecting duct
———————————————— - Calyx
- Renal pelvis
Order of renal blow flow
- Renal artery (blood in)
- Afforestation arteriole
- Glomerulus
- Efferent arteriole
- Peritubular capillaries
- Vasa recta
- Renal vein (blood out)
Renal blood flow
1 200 ml/min
Renal plasma flow
600—700 ml/min
Resembles a sieve; non-selective filter of plasma substances with a molecular weight of < 70 000 Da
GLOMERULUS
— consists of a coil of approximately 8 capillary lobes (capillary tuft)
— within the Bowman’s capsule
1st function to be affected in renal disease
TUBULAR REABSORPTION
Renal threshold for glucose
160—180 mg/dl
Major site of reapportion of plasma substances
PCT (65%)
Regulates water reabsorption in the DCT and CD
ANTI-DIURETIC HORMONE (ADH/VASOPRESSIN)
2 major functions of tubular secretion
- Elimination of waste products not filtered by the glomerulus
- Regulation of the acid-base balance in the body thru secretion of hydrogen ions (in the form of NH4+ and H2PO4)
Inability to produce an acid urine
RENAL TUBULAR ACIDOSIS
—hydrogen ions are not excreted in the urine
This is used to evaluate glomerular filtration
CHEMICAL TESTS
Old glomerular filtration test
UREA
Most common glomerular filtration test
CREATININE
