Renal failure Flashcards
signs of renal failure
normochromic, normocytic anaemia
hypoalbuminaemia
hypocalcaemia
hyperphosphatemia
test/investgiations
BP (lying and standing)

tx for anaemia renal impairment hypocalcaemia hyperphosphataemia
anaemia: iron, b12, folate. blood transfusion if symptomatic, EPO
renal impairment: maintain good BP control, treat underlying, dialysis, renal transplant
hypocalcaemia: ca2+ supplements, alfracalcidol
hyperphosphatemia- phosphate binds, aluminium hydroxide
what is chronic renal failure?
an irreversible loss of renal function. substantial rise in urea and creatinine, anaemia, hypocalaemia and hyperphosphotaemia
effects the skeletan- osteodystrophy. osteomalacia (defective 25-OH,D3) which leads to reduced ca2+ absorption from the gut. 2’ hyperparathyroidism
