A Woman with a UTI
4%-10% of nonpregnant women have asymptomatic bacteriuria

In pregnancy, ureters dilate (effect of estrogen), stasis of urine can occur
10%-15%
Assessment: (S/S)
- Frequency and pain on urination
- Pain in lumbar region that radiates downward (pyelonephritis)
- N & V
- Malaise
- Fever

Tx/Management
- Clean-catch urine sample for culture and sensitivity
- Common anti-infectives: amoxicillin, ampicillin, cephalosphorins
- Sulfonamides can be used in early pregnancy
- Tetracyclines are contraindicated

Hyperactive bladder
- Hyperactive bladder is that which contracts more frequently than usual
- S/S: Urinary frequency, urgency, incontinence
- Tx: Fesoterodine – antispasmodic drug
A Woman with a Hyperactive Bladder
- Kidneys may not produce erythropoietin and may cause severe anemia
- Pt may require dialysis
- Risk: preterm labor
- Progesterone may be administered IM before dialysis
