Renal Anatomy And Physiology Flashcards
What is the urinary system made up of?
2 kidneys, 2 ureters, a bladder, and a urethra.
What does the kidneys do?
Produces urine from wastes.
Where is urine transported from the kidneys?
Urine is transported by the ureters to the bladders.
What does the bladder do what’s it receives urine from the kidneys?
The bladder stores the urine until excreted from the body.
How is urine excreted from the body?
Via the urethra.
How many nephrons does each kidney have?
Each kidney has over 1 million nephrons.
What are nephrons?
Functional units of the kidney.
What do nephrons contain?
Composed of glomerulus(tangled cluster of capillaries surrounded by the Bowman’s capsule) and the tubules.
How does blood enter the kidneys?
Through the renal artery which branches off into capillaries.
Why are kidneys so important for good health?
They filter fluid, wastes, and extra electrolytes from capillaries into the tubules.
What is ADH and what does it do?
Antidiuretic Hormone, and is the factor of how much urine is produced.
How many functions do the kidneys have?
4
Excretory function:
Ridding the body of waste products and excess fluid and electrolytes.
Regulatory function:
Maintaining acid/base balance. Fluid balance and electrolyte balance.
Filtration function:
Nephrons retain something’s, filter out and reabsorb some.
