Kidmey Failure Flashcards
What are the two types of renal failure?
Acute renal failure or chronic renal failure.
When does Acute start?
Suddenly is is reversible if the cause is corrected.
How does Chronic renal failure start?
Happens slowly over a period of time.
What are the two main causes of CRF?
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- G something
Can CRF be reversed?
No, occurs in 5 stages with a gradual decline in renal function. When it gets to stage 5, there is only 10-15% kidney function.
What’s does renal failure affect in the body?
Everything, THE WHOLE BODY!
Digestive:
Uremia causes nausea/vomiting/diarrhea and loss of appetite (anorexia)
Skin:
Dry, itchy, darkened
Cardiovascular:
Potassium causes muscle weakness including heart weakness. Which can lead to arrhythmias, cardiac arrest and death. Fluid can cause increase blood pressure and Edema. Edema should be assessed pre-and post treatment.
Skeletal:
Calcitriol there is decreased absorption of calcium from the gut. The parathyroid hormone also rises as a result. In order to keep blood calcium within a normal range, calcium is taken from the bones causing weak and brittle bones. Calcium then combines with phosphorus and deposits and soft tissue.
Lungs:
Fluid in the lungs causes shortness of breath and also puts the patient at risk for pulmonary infection.
