Renal Flashcards
What is the minimum urine output for children?
1 ml /kg / hr
When would a child get acute glomerulonephritis
After a strep infection
How will acute glomerulonephritis present?
Hematuria (cola coloured pee)
Facial edema (upper body)
Hypertension
Positive ASO titer
Elevated BUN and creatinine
Treatment for acute glomerulonephritis?
Supportive care
Diet that’s low in sodium, protein, and potassium
Diuretics
Antihypertensive (ace inhibitors)
Maybe a steroid
How does nephrotic syndrome present?
Protein urea… it will look like a beer foam on the top
Dependent edema and in males their scrotum
What is the supportive care for nephrotic syndrome?
Low sodium.. low protein.. low fat (problems with hypercholesterolemia) diet
Steroids
It can recur.. and frequently does
What causes hemolytic uremic syndrome?
A sugar toxin producing E. coli
What are the symptoms for hemolytic uremic syndrome?
Bloody diarrhea
Vomiting
Cramping
Pale skin
Anemia because the sugar toxin is going to cause blood cell destruction.. so the blood cells are going to clog up inside the kidneys and cause renal failure or at least renal insufficiency
Shistocytes in the blood
How would your treat hemolytic uremic syndrome
Supportive care
If renal function drops.. dialysis
Usually will recover
What is hypospadias?
A defect where the opening of the urethra is on the ventral (under) the penis instead of the tip
What is epispadias?
A defect where the opening of the urethra is on the dorsum (top) of the penis instead of the tip.
What is cryptorchidism
Failure of testes to descend (usually just 1)
What is vesicoureteral reflux? (VUR)
Abnormal flow of urine from the bladder up the ureters to the kidneys
The biggest problem is recurring infections
