Renal Flashcards
What are the major extrarenal complications of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD)?
cerebral aneurysms
hepatic and pancreatic cysts
cardiac valve disease
colonic diverticula
abdominal wall hernias
seminal vesicle cyst
What is the most serious (extra-renal) complication of ADPKD?
A ruptured cerebral aneurysm, resulting in a subarachnoid or intracerebral hemorrhage
How do you differentiate ADPKD from acquired cystic disease secondary to dialysis?
A positive family history as well as large kidneys (indeed height-adjusted total kidney volume is a key marker you measure and related to risk of eGFR decline/development of ESRD) and a cystic contour favour ADPKD whilst an absent family history and normal or small sized kidneys with smooth contour favours acquired cystic disease (secondary to dialysis)
