Q

Who ruled the area and why did Jews resent them?

A

The area was ruled over by the Romans who were polytheist. The Romans also viewed their emperor as god like. The Jewish people were strict monotheists and therefore many objected to Roman rule. They resented having to pay taxes to the Roman emperor as this was by some regarded as not being obedient to their own God.

Q

This is from a Roman historian
“Nero (a Roman Emperor that ruled just after Jesus died) blamed and tortured a group of people hated for their evil practices, a group popularly known as Christians. Christ from whom the group took their name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, one of our governors, during the reign of the Emperor Tiberius, the deadly superstition…broke out not just in Judea, but also in Rome…’

What does this tell us about Jesus?
A

There was a group of people called Christians who were followers of jesus. They were persecuted by the Romans for their beliefs. It says that they had ‘evil practices’ - we don’t know what they are referring to but it may refer to the way they worshiped Jesus Christ.

  Is this source reliable?
A

It is reliable as it is written by a Roman historian who was not Christian and therefore would be regarded as objective. It confirms what is written in the gospels that Jesus was put to death by Pontius Pilate.

Q

“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”

What does this tell us about Jesus?

A

Firstly, this gives an approximate date of the birth of Jesus. It states that he was born in reign of Caeser Augustus and when Quirinus was governor of Syria. This is important historical information for believers and biblical historians.

Secondly this give precise geographical information about where Jesus was born and about why Joseph and Mary travelled from Nazareth.

Q

Source 2: This is from the Gospel of Luke.

Is this source reliable?

A

On the one hand it is regarded as a reliable source as Luke uses accurate historical and geographical knowledge about the birth of Jesus. We know that other non-Christians confirm that both Ceaser and Quirinus did rule over Palestine and Syria in the 1st century CE.

On the other hand this may not be regarded as a reliable sources as Luke is one of the 4 evangelists. He wrote a Gospel – the good news of Jesus death and resurrection. He is therefore a believer in Jesus Christ and is therefore very biased.

What do Catholics believe about the incarnation?

A

The word incarnation means to be ‘made flesh’. Christians believe that God was made flesh in the person of Jesus. God was then physically present on earth.

  2. They believe that God made himself man *so that we could be forgiven for our sins and reconciled with God. *
  3. Jesus also fully revealed to us what God is like for example when he healed people, he revealed that God is compassionate.
