A

Saint Kateri Telakwitha was born in a Mohawk village. When she was little, her village was affected by smallpox. The small pox took both her parents and covered her face in scars. Her mother’s friend, Anastasia, took Kateri in, teaching her about God. Her uncle, another Mohawk chief, then adopted her. Her uncle and aunt soon wanted her to marry, but Kateri rejected the idea, making her uncle angry. She soon was baptized, but life in the village was hard as a Christian, she didn’t get food sometimes, was to work on Sundays, and was ridiculed. Finally, someone suggested her to travel to Canada, where there would be others like her so she ran away with a companion named Hot Ashes. Although she was pursued by her uncle, he couldn’t catch her and so they arrived at the Jesuit village safely. There, Kateri prayed often and attended Mass but she was very weak and died at the age of 24. Before she died, her last words were, “I love you, Jesus.” and minutes after she died, her face became beautiful and her scars disappeared. Her symbol is the lily and turtle, and she is the patron of the environment.
