What is Purgatory?

A

A temporary punishment where those souls that died in grace would be made ready for heaven.
Seen in Western literature from the Middle Ages onwards.
Thought to bring the living and the dead closer together.
There are similarities with other religion’s versions, but is contested in Christianity itself.
Was the motivation for many crusades, pilgrimages and social philanthropy.

What is the Apocalypse?

A

Is thought to be the end of the world.
Describes images of suffering in the Book of Revelation. Revelation is the translation of apocalypse from Latin.
The book depicts good triumphs over evil, faithfulness will be rewarded and justice will be done.
At Judgement day, the faithful will be rewarded as sins will slowly increase.
It affected relationships with non-europeans.

What are relics?

A

They are the remains of or an object associated with a saint and is carried in a reliquary.
It can show the link between life and death and can provide healing powers if touched.
They can bring honour and privilege to the possessor.
e.g. Saint Ivo’s head, or christ’s crucifixion nails.

What were indulgences?

A

They were full or partial permission of sin.
They rose in the 11th and 12th century when purgatory became more widespread.
It could be granted by the pope or archbishops. Bishops could grant them to ordinary people

A

They were journeys to holy places or shrines as acts of devotion to God and for spiritual help.
Seen as an the ultimate act to be forgiven of their sins.

Who is the Virgin Mary?

A

She was free of sin and so gave birth to Jesus through the immaculate conception.
she is associated with blue and is seen as central to Catholicism as well as being important to Orthodox Christianity.
People would pray to her and count Hail Mary’s (Ave Maria) on rosary beads.

What was the immaculate conception?

A

The immaculate conception was where angel Gabriel landed on Mary’s shoulders and touched her stomach. Jesus grew inside of her because of that.

What is Transubstantiation?

A

It is the transformation of wine and bread into the blood and body of Christ.
People would take a sip of wine and have some bread.
Ordinary people would be able to have bread, but the wine mainly went to the bishops and priests.

What did the Pope and Priests do?

A

They were the intermediate between ordinary people and God, and could perform last rights and confessions to clear the soul before they go to heaven.
They were educated, so they could understand Latins and were the only ones who could read they bible.
The Pope is the descendant of Peter (the apostle) and holds the keys to heaven
The Pope is elected by other cardinals.

What were the Seven Sacraments?

A

The Seven Sacraments were rituals that teach, strengthen and express faith in Catholicism.
They were: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Holy Orders (ordination), Matrimony.
They originated with the start of the church and were gifts from God, with being made holy by doing them. If you failed to do once promised, you had to ask for forgiveness.
