Religion, Relationships and Families Flashcards
Catholic views on the equality of men and women
“God created humans in his image, in the image of God
he created him; male and female.’He said to them ‘be fruitful and multiply’ (Genesis 1:27)
Shows how important human life is to God
Men and women are equal in the eyes of God
They are designed to complement each other (produce a harmony
together)
Catholic teachings
Each of the two sexes has equal dignity, though in a different way’ (CCC 2335)
This means that men and women are equal but have different roles - neither is subservient (should always obey the other unquestioningly)
The Catholic Church views sex as:
Marital:
• Sex is a gift from God
• It should take place with marriage –committed and life long relationship
• Where vow are made in before God & friends/family
• Catholic marriage is a Sacrament - God is part of it
• Must be consummated
Unitive:
• Sex bonds (unites) the couple and deepens their love.
• They become closer and more committed.
• They give themselves utterly & completely to each other.
Procreative:
• God creates new life through sex.
• There is more intensity in self-giving when open to new life.
