What is war?
Fighting between nations to resolve issues between themes
What is peace?
An absence of conflict
What is justice?
Bringing about what is right and fair
What is forgiveness?
Showing compassion and pardoning someone for what they have done wrong
What is reconciliation?
When individuals or groups restore friendly relations after conflict or disagreement; also a sacrament in the catholic church
Violence
Using actions that threaten or harm others
Protest
An expression of disapproval, often in a public group
The Just war theory
Thomas Aquinas said that fighting is justifiable if:
- the war has a just cause, eg. Self defence
- the war must be declared by the correct authority
- the intention of the war has to be to defeat wrongdoing and promote good. The good achieved by the war must outweigh the evil that led to it.
- Fighting must be a last resort.
- There must be a reasonable chance of success.
- The methods used to fight the war must be proportional to achieve success. Excessive force should not be used.
Terrorism
The unlawful use of violence, usually against innocent civilians, to achieve a political goal
Reasons for war
- Greed
- Self defence
- Retaliation
Holy war
Fighting for a religious cause or God, often inspired by a religious leader.
Nuclear weapons
Weapons that work by a nuclear reaction, devastate huge areas and kill large numbers of people
Weapons of mass destruction
Weapons that can kill large numbers of people and/or cause great damage
Chemical weapons
Weapons that use chemicals to harm humans and destroy the natural environment
Biological weapons
Weapons that use living organisms to cause disease or death
Pacifism
The belief of people who refuse to take part in war and any other form of violence
Peacemaker
A person who works to establish peace in the world or in a certain part of it
Christian beliefs for pacifism
- Some Christian’s such as Quakers are pacifists, they believe Jesus taught peace and forgiveness and opposed violence, even in self defence.
- Other Christians are not pacifist as they believe violence is justified in some circumstances.
Reasons religious people may fight
- They may fight to establish a government of their religion.
- They may fight to regain land they feel is theirs.
- They may fight because of differences in belief or practice with another religious group.
What is a Christian charity? How do they help victims of war
Christian aid, they provide:
- food
- water
- education
- healthcare
- clothing
Shelter
