John’s preparation for Jesus’ ministry
John’s role was to prepare the people for the coming of the Messiah. He did this through telling people to baptise for repentance. People from all of the Judean countryside got baptised by him in the river Jordan and confessed their sins.
What was the significance of John’s preparation for Jesus’ ministry?
- Baptism, the use of water as a sign of repentance (turn away from sins)
- He taught people about the need to ask forgiveness for sins and once baptised begin a new life.
- He taught the people that Jesus would be the one to give Christian believers the gift of the Holy Spirit
Jesus’ baptism and temptation
- Jesus came from Nazareth and was baptised by John.
- As he came out the water he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending. A voice came from heaven “You are my son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
- Spirit drove him into the wilderness for 40 days, tempted by Satan.
What is the significance of Jesus’ baptism and temptation?
- Baptism, the use of water as a sign of new life
- Heavens tore apart, sign of God’s presence
- Temptations, Jesus a role model, avoiding temptations to show faith
The paralysed man?
- In Capernaum Jesus was speaking, then 4 people came carrying a paralysed man.
- When they couldn’t get to Jesus through the crowds they removed the roof above him. They lay him down.
- When Jesus saw their faith he said to the man “son your sins are forgiven.”
- Some scribes thought it was blasphemy for he wasn’t God.
- Jesus said to the paralysed man “stand up, take your mat and go to your home.” He then stood up and left.
What is the significance of the paralysed man?
- Faith, the men had faith in Jesus that he could cure the paralysed man.
- Conflict, between Jesus and the scribes/teachers.
- Authority, Jesus’ authority over the illness of the man. Authority he had to forgive sins.
What happened during the healing of Jairus’ daughter?
- One of the leaders of the synagogue, Jairus came to Jesus and asked him to heal his daughter.
- While he was still speaking some people came from Jairus’ house and said your daughter is dead and not to bother Jesus.
- Jesus heard this and said ‘do not fear, only believe.’
- Then in the house he saw people weeping and commotion and he said that the girl is sleeping not dead.
- He said to the girl ‘talitha cum’ which means little girl get up.
- She got up and started walking.
What is the significance of the healing of Jairus’ daughter?
- Faith, Jairus demonstrated faith in Jesus here to heal his ‘dead’ daughter
What occurred during Jesus’ rejection at Nazareth?
- On the Sabbath Jesus was teaching in the synagogue in his home town.
- Many were astounded by his knowledge.
- They took offence at him as they had seen him grow up and didn’t feel he was special.
What is the significance of the rejection at Nazareth?
- Rejection and Persecution, many Christians can resonate with this today eg. In Africa.
What happened during the Feeding of the 5000?
- He was teaching the apostles.
- When it grew late his disciples came to him and asked Jesus to send the people away to surrounding villages to get food.
- Jesus said ‘you give them something to eat.’
- They only had 5 loaves and 2 fish
- He ordered the people to sit down in groups.
- Jesus blessed the bread and broke the loaves and divided the 2 fish among the people.
- Everyone that ate was full, the fish and bread totalled to 12 baskets. 500 ate
What is the significance of the Feeding of the 5000?
- Jesus like Moses/Messiah.
- Demonstrated power of God by feeding 5000 with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish.
What was the conversation at Caesarea Philippi?
- Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Phillipi and on the way he asked his disciples “who do people say that I am?”
- They answered him “John the Baptism, and others Elijah and some others one of the prophets.”
- He asked them “But who do you think that I am.”
- Peter responded with “You are the Messiah.”
- He then taught them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and after three days rise again.
- Peter rebuked him in private and then Jesus rebuked Peter.
What is the significance of the conversation at Caesarea Philippi?
A change of direction in Jesus’ life after this:
- He had less to do with crowds and concentrated on the disciples
- He set out for Jerusalem, the centre of religious and political power, and the place where he would die.
- The tone of the gospel gets darker, Jesus was more challenged by those he met.
What happened during the transfiguration of Jesus?
- Six days later Jesus took Peter, James and John and led them up a mountain apart.
- He was transfigured before them, his clothes became dazzling white.
- Elijah and Moses appeared.
- Peter asked Jesus (Rabbi) if it was good for them to be there.
- Then a cloud overshadowed and voice said “this is my son, the beloved; listen to him!”
- When they looked around they saw no one and only Jesus.
- Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone about this event until after he had risen from the dead.
What is the significance of the transfiguration of Jesus?
- The voice from heaven, showed Jesus’ authority as son of God.
- Shows Christians Jesus as the Son of God. Showed Jesus was both man and God.
The passion prediction of Jesus
- They were on the way to Jerusalem.
- Jesus took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was to happen to him.
- “and the son of man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles; they will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise.”
What is the significance of the passion prediction of Jesus?
- Christians can see the example Jesus set and follow it.
- Commitment, can show Christians that they need to be determined to do what they know is right, even if it is difficult.
- Suffering, helped Christian’s believe they needed to be prepared to face suffering and to make sacrifices to remain true to their faith.
What was the request of James and John?
- James and John asked if they could sit at Jesus’ right and left hand in his glory.
- Jesus said that “to sit at my right hand or left hand is not mine to grant but it is for those whom it has been prepared.”
- The 10 began to be angry with James and John.
- Jesus said that whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant and whoever wishes to be the first among you must be slave of all.
- “For the son of man came not be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
What is the significance of the request of James and John?
- Shows Christians that sometimes they ask for selfish things in prayer and when they don’t achieve their selfish thing they question prayer. This story shows that maybe they were just asking for the wrong thing.
What happened with Bartimaeus?
- They came to Jericho and as he was leaving Bartimaeus a blind beggar was sitting by the roadside.
- Realising it was Jesus he shouted “Jesus, Son of David have mercy on me!” Many told him to be quiet but he cried out louder.
- Bartimaeus after being asked, got up and came to Jesus.
- Jesus said to him “What do you want me to do for you?”
- The man asked to see again.
- Jesus said to him “Go, your faith has made you well.”
- He regained his sight and followed Jesus
What is the significance of Bartimaeus?
- Jesus was happy to help an outsider and someone who was ignored. Shows Christian’s to do the same
What occurred during Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem?
- Jesus enters Jerusalem and palms are laid down in front of him as he comes in on a donkey which his disciples had got for him.
- The public shouted “Hosanna, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!”
- He went into the temple.
What is the significance of the entry into Jerusalem?
- Christians believe that when Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey he showed his humility and desire for peace.
What happened during the Last Supper?
- His disciples set up the Passover meal in someone’s house.
- Jesus joined them and when they were eating he said “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.”
- When eating, he took a load of bread and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them and said “Take, this is my body.” Then he took a cup and gave it to them and they all drank from it. He said “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.”
What is the significance of the Last Supper?
- Jesus’ sacrifice, people celebrate with wine and bread.
- Catholics believe that Jesus’ body and blood became bread and wine. Protestant tradition teaches that bread and wine are symbols of Jesus’ body and blood.
What occurred in Gethsemane?
- Jesus went to Gethsemane and said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
- He took Peter,James and John and prayed telling them to stay awake.
- After praying he saw they were asleep. Told them to pray.
- He came back and they were still sleeping and for a third time.
- He went back and while he was speaking Judas one of the disciples arrived and with him was a crowd with swords and clubs.
- Judas kissed Jesus as a sign to the men of who to arrest.
- They arrested him. Jesus said “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit.”
What is the significance of Jesus in Gethsemane?
- Jesus’ prayer was a plea for God to save him, calling for his father but he accepted that God’s will should be done. This showed that if Jesus was prepared to do God’s will even if it would lead to his own suffering they should accept the will of God.
What happened during the trial before Jewish authorities?
- Took Jesus to the high priest. Some gave fake testimony’s against him saying that he said “I will destroy this temple that is made with hands and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.”
- Jesus didn’t answer any questions apart from saying he is the messiah.
- High priest tore his clothes. He committed blasphemy and was sentenced to death. Some spat on him and he was beat.
Significance of the Trial before Jewish authorities
- Jesus’ wrong conviction, Judas to blame. Also Pilate to blame for giving into the crowd.
What occurred during the trial before Pilate?
- Jesus was handed to Pilate
- Pilate was amazed at Jesus not responding as his life was on the line.
- Pilate released Barabbas at the festival where he released a prisoner.
- Pilate asked the crowd what to do with the “King of the Jews.” They all said crucify him so he was handed over to be crucified.
The crucifixion and burial of Jesus
- Crucified Jesus for being “King of the Jews.”
- Two bandits were crucified with him.
- In the afternoon Jesus shouted “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” Which means “my god, my god, why have you forsaken me?”
- He breathed his last breath and the curtain of the temple was torn into two. The centurion facing him realised he was God’s son.
- Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for Jesus’ body, he gave it.
- He laid the body in a tomb wrapped in linen cloth.
- Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body was laid. They helped bring up Jesus in Gaililee.
Significance of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus
- Christians believe it was God’s plan for the salvation of humanity
- Jesus fulfilled the Old testament prophecies, he was the messiah and the ultimate suffering servant.
- Many people believe his crucifixion shows that good is more powerful than evil and love stronger than hate.
What occurred at the empty tomb?
- When the sabbath was over, Mary the mother of James and Mary Magdalene bought spices to announce Jesus.
- When they arrived they saw the stone for the entrance had been moved.
- When they entered they a saw a man sitting there who said Jesus had been raised and to tell his disciples and Peter that he is going to Galilee.
- In shock and amazement they said nothing to anyone.
What is the significance of the empty tomb?
Confirms Jesus’ resurrection and his identity as the Son of God.
What are some counterarguments to the empty tomb?
- The disciples took the body.
- The women went to the wrong place.
- They were hallucinating.
- It was a ghost.
