Mecca:
Mecca is the capital of Mecca Province in the Hejaz region of
western Saudi Arabia and the holiest city in Islam.
Salat:
Prayer 5 times a day. One of the pillars of Islam.
Sunni:
Sunni’ comes from the Arabic word ‘sunna’ meaning tradition.
‘Sunni’ means one who followed the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad
who is seen as the model for mankind.
Imam:
Muslim prayer leader.
Zakat:
Giving alms to the poor and needy; the third pillar of Islam.
Hijrah –
The migration of Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah. The
Islamic lunar calendar begins from the lunar year of the hijrah (622
CE).
Muhammad:
Muhammad is a prophet in Islam who received the Quran
(Sacred Book of Islam). According to Islamic doctrine, he was a
prophet divinely inspired to preach and confirm the monotheistic
teachings of Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets.
Ayat:
Translates directly to mean “signs,” but means “verses,” in the
Quran.
Ka’bah:
A cube-shaped building that Abraham built under divine inspiration
and dedicated to the One God. It is the place people visit during Hajj
(pilgrimage).
Hijab:
Means being modesty. It may include the wearing of a sacred
headscarf
Mosque:
Sacred place of worship in Islam. All mosques face the Kab’ah in
Saudi Arabia.
Quran:
The sacred book of Islam. It is considered God’s word and not
Prophet Muhammad’s word even though Prophet Muhammad conveyed it.
