Apostle:
One of the twelve disciples chosen by Christ (Jesus) to go out to
teach the gospel to the world.
Disciple:
A follower of Jesus during his public ministry; include, but is not
limited to, the twelve apostles. It is anyone who follows Jesus’ teachings.
Trinity:
Christian belief that there are three persons in one God; the Father,
the son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. There is only one God with three parts.
Martyr:
Someone who has suffered or died for his or her religion or beliefs.
Saint:
Holy person that Christians venerate.
King Henry VIII:
Started the Anglican Church because the pope (head of
the Catholic Church) would not grant him a divorce.
Chi Rho:
A symbol that represents Jesus. This symbol is derived from the
Greek word, XPIETOE which means “Christ,” and was used by the early
Christians.
Pentecost:
Christian festival commemorating the descent of the Holy
Spirit upon the apostles to help them spread the Christian faith.
Emperor Constantine:
Emperor Constantine (ca A.D. 280– 337) was the
first emperor to accept Christianity. His mother was a follower of
Christianity and was of great influence to him.
Transubstantiation:
hanging of bread and wine into the substance of the body
and blood of Christ during Holy Communion. For the Catholic and Orthodox
denominations of Christianity, the Eucharist is Jesus, when blessed by a priest or
bishop. In other denominations, the eucharist is symbolic of Jesus but not actually
Him.
Resurrection:
Rising of Christ from his tomb on the third day after his crucifixion
(death).
Sacrament:
Ritual or ceremony that is an outward sign of spiritual benefits that are
given to the recipient.
Gospels:
Story of Jesus Christ’s life and teachings told in the first four books of the
Bible’s New Testament. The Four Gosepls are: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The word gospel means “Good News.”
