- The Church provided the focus of popular entertainment
- Churches played a fundamental role in ordinary peoples lives

Lollards and anti-clericalism
A
- A small minority believed in Lollardy, founded by John Wycliffe - they considered the Catholic Church to be corrupt
- Criticism of the Church did exist however there were only ever specific outbursts that were usually politically motivated

- It was a period of widening educational opportunities - this still depended on where a person lived
- Humanism started to become prevalent at Magdalen but it was not yet widespread
