Q

Christian responses to discrimination & prejudice

A

“You are all one in Christ Jesus” - Galatians 3:28 - we are all equal so should all be treated the same, discrimination not justifiable in Gods eyes
“Let us make man in our own image” - Genesis 1:27 - God made us all and to him we are all equal, there is no reason to discriminate and no one should be judged for who they are

Q

It isn’t possible to achieve genuine gender equality

A

There will always be women who need maternity leave so are less likely to be employed as time is needed off work
Paying for childcare is expensive so working to pay this seems stupid when you could stay at home and do it yourself
There are still more men in higher positions than women and in the last 100 years this has remained

Q

Positive discrimination is a good thing

A

It’s about reversing privilege-giving those who are disadvantaged in society equal opportunities
It’s a short term fix but necessary if we are to have a truly equal society
We need to insist on it to make sure people aren’t unfairly discriminated
Can help change powers - fewer white men in power

17
Q

Positive discrimination isn’t a good thing

A

Discrimination is discrimination-all positive discrimination does is change those who are being discriminated against
We cannot solve the problem in the long term
Enforcing it won’t stop people being racist/sexist, it just stops them from acting on these views

18
Q

“I do not permit a woman to teach or assume authority over a man; she must be quiet” - 1 Timothy 2:12

A

Fundamentalist - men are more important than women
Liberal - society is very different today and open
Conservative - this was relevant at the time

19
Q

Issues of poverty

A
Cause of segregation - society divide between rich and poor
More crime
Cycle of poverty
Hygiene issues
Homelessness
20
Q

“Everyone who can afford it has a duty to give to charity”

AGREE

A

Those who are lucky enough to live a comfortable life should do something to help others - a duty that comes with a privilege
We all have something to give - better than nothing
Even a small amount can make a huge difference
Everyone deserves a chance to escape poverty
Giving to a charity can make us feel good about ourselves

21
Q

“Everyone who can afford it has a duty to give to charity”

DISAGREE

A

The money I earn is mine so it’s up to me how it’s spent
We already help the poor enough eg. tax
Giving to charity is a choice not a duty
Some people in poverty are there due to their own mistakes
It should be about genuine engagement

22
Q

“But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against hi , how does God’s love abide in him?” - 1 John 3:17

A

If someone needs help you must help them
If you ignore this then why should God love you?
Wealth should be shared out to those who are less fortunate

23
Q

Buddhist attitude to money

A

Don’t handle large amounts of money - it would be impractical not to have any money as money is needed
Use money only for essentials not for things you want
Don’t handle money if it’s possible
