Engaged Buddhism
A movement in Buddhism that applies the Buddhas teachings to social and environmental issues.
prejudice
unfairly judging someone, holding a biased opinion.
discrimination
actions or behaviour that result from prejudice.
tithe
one tenth of annual produce or earnings
emergency aid
short term aid- given to communities in a time of crisis
long term aid
Assistance give to a country over a long period of time that has a lasting effect.
social justice
ensuring that society treats people fairly whether they are poor/wealthy and protects peoples human rights.
Christianity
Social justice:
‘let justice roll on like a river’ - Amos 5:24
‘love your neighbour as yourself’ - Mark 12:31
Buddhism
Social justice:
Engaged Buddhism: uses Buddhas teachings to tackle social and environmental issues.
Suffering is inevitable but we should try and relive the suffering of others.
Equality
Having equal rights, status and oppertunities.
Christianity
Gender prejudice & discrimination.
All people are equal as they are made in Gods image.
Catholic and Orthodox forbid female priests
‘women should remain silent in churches.. for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church’ - 1 Corinthians
Buddhism
Gender prejudice & discrimination.
Should treat people equally, showing loving kindness.
In some Buddhist schools women are not allowed to be fully ordained.
Theravada Buddhism does not give nuns same recognition as monks.
Christianity

heterosexual relationships that lead to procreation was Gods intention (Genesis)
Homosexual relationships ‘sinful’
Others think homosexual relationships are morally acceptable.

Many think moral precepts apply to everyone regardless of sexual orientation.
