“Love your neighbour as yourself” Mark 12:31 NIV
“A new command I give you: love one another” John 13:34 NIV
The Good Samaritan parable is an important Christian teaching about prejudice. It shows how prejudice can be wrong in a lot of cases.
What does Buddhism teach about attitudes to equality?
Buddhists try to show karuna (compassion) towards all humans, regardless of age, gender, race or sexual orientation.
Mahayana Buddhists believe that everyone is born with Buddha-Nature (the belief that everyone has a piece of the Buddha inside of them). This means that everyone has the potential to reach enlightenment.
Buddhists believe that all humans suffer. The Dalai Lama teaches that all humans are equal because we all suffer.
How have Christian attitudes towards gender roles shifted?
Traditionally, Christians believed that a man would make money and lead a family, whilst a woman would stay home and care for the children.
No women were ever permitted to become church leaders, because it was believed that they had less authority in religion.
Although some Christians still believe this, nowadays, many think that men and women can switch traditional roles.
In some Protestant denominations, there are now female ministers (although not in Orthodox or Catholic ones).
What are Buddhist views on gender roles?
The Sigalovada Sutta explains that the men are the providers and the women are the caretakers. However, these roles are both of the same importance.
The Lotus Sutra teaches that both men and women can become enlightened.
Some Buddhists believe that a woman must be reborn as a man to become enlgihtened. These Buddhists use this to argue that women should not be ordained as nuns.
The Buddha initially said that women could not become nuns, but his Aunt changed his mind. This was a radical decision because at that time, women were seen as subservient to men.
What are Christian teachings on racism?
Christianity teaches that racism is unacceptable, and God made everyone equal.
Christians believe it is their duty to fight off racism, which is why many Christian individuals or organisations teach others to treat everyone equally.
The Church of England recommends that people make “neighbours out of strangers” in its report, ‘Faithful Cities’.
The Church of England has been criticised for not having enough ethnic minorities their clergy, so it is now making efforts to achieve more diversity.
“From one man he made all nations” Acts 17:26 NIV
“You are all one in Christ Jesus” Galatians 3:28 NIV
What are Buddhist teachings on racism?
Buddhists believe that all humans suffer because of the 3 poisons (greed, hatred and ignorance).
Feelings of hatred or dislike towards others should be extinguished and replaced with feelings of loving kindness towards all humans (metta).
If a Buddhists feels superior than others, they are ignorant. Wanting to be superior is a craving for ‘self’ and leads to suffering.
There is no fixed self (anatta), so no person can be better than another.
“We are all basically the same human beings” Dalai Lama
What are Christian views on homosexuality?
Many Christians focus on loving their neighbour, and so accept homosexuality.
Many individuals of the Church of England and the Catholic Church disagree with their Churches’ stances on homosexuality.
Some Christians believe that homosexual it is a sin.
In 2017, the Church of England bishops issued a report saying that they would not change the Church’s definition of marriage as being between one man and woman.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church 2357 says homosexual acts are contrary to the natural law.
