Community Service
Punishment of an offender by causing them physical pain - now illegal in the UK
Corporal Punishment
An offence which is punishable by law, e.g. stealing, murder
Crime
Capital punishment; a form of punishment where the prisoner is executed for their crime(s)
Death Penalty
An aim of punishment - to put people off committing crimes
Deterrence
The ability of people to make decisions for themselves without constraint
Free Will
Showing mercy and pardoning someone for what they have done wrong
Forgiveness
Crimes, often including violence, that are usually targeted at a person because of their race, religion, sexuality, disability or gender
Hate Crimes
The idea that an action is right if it provides maximum happiness for the maximum number of people affected by it
Principle of Utility
Something legally done to someone as a result of being found guilty of breaking the law

An aim of punishment - to change someone’s behaviour for the better

An aim of punishment - to get your own back
Retribution
All life is holy as it’s created and loved by God; human life should not be abused or misused
