E.g rehab, community service, counselling

Punishment inflicted as revenge for a criminal act
e.g the death penalty
What is deterrence?
Discouraging an act through threats
e.g points on license, fines, imprisonment
What is protection?
Protecting both the criminal and the public from harm
e.g imprisonment, asylums
What is corporal punishment?
Physical but not extreme punishment.
e.g getting the cane in school
What is capital punishment?
The legally authorised killing of someone as punishment for crime
e.g the death penalty
What is a pacifist?
Someone who believes war and violence are wrong
