Religion As A Force Of Change Flashcards
Calvinist beliefs -predestination -Weber
God has predetermined which souls would be saved and which would not, even before birth
- Gods decisions was already made and couldn’t be altered
Devine transcendence Weber
God was so far above this world that no human could possible claim to know h his will.
- this created what Weber called a ‘salvation panic’ in the calvinists - they didn’t know if they had been chosen to be saved and couldn’t do anything to earn salvation
Idea of vocation or calling - before Calvinism
Calling to serve god- meant leaving everyday life to join a monastery.
-then Calvinist’s made the idea of a calling, meant constant methodical work in an occupation- work could not earn salvation it’s just a religious duty.

New Christian Right Movement -Bruce
It was hugely unsuccessful Bruce believes this is why:

- lacked wide spread support
