-large organisations- millions of members - run by professional priests - tend to be more attractive to the higher class because they are conservative and often closely liked to the state
Sects- troelesh- stark& Bain ridge
Sees sects as small, exclusive groups.
High level of commitment
Draw their members from the poor and oppressed
-found sects break away from existing organisations because they disagree over views or theirs tension between the deprived and privileged
Denominations-
Describes denominations as lying midway between churches and sects- members are less exclusive than sects
Cults- mason family
- Least organised of them all
- sands shared interests
- lead my therapists who claim to have “special knowledge”
- do not demand strong commitment
Mason family- highly critical of the outside world- seek radical change- members must break away from their former life
