religion and ethics Flashcards
for the exam to be reasonably ethical
Anscombe - no sense 2
1)without law giver makes no sense of moral law. 2)law must come from higher power - does not make sense to have conception of ethics unless believe in God.
response to anscombe 2
1) should not focus on superficial form of language - raining does not mean someone is raining - requiring does not mean something is requiring. 2) why think morality is command and requires commander?
reason kant 2
1)Nature of rationality demands we act in accordance with universal rules. 2) morality from own rational natures.
Self legislation 2
1)One cannot determine own rules that have force - 2) like promising yourself - can always free yourself form self promises
Objective goodness and dct 2
1) objective goodness lends purpose to human action - indicates personal quality - commands of god - 2)leads to dct - moral goodness/wrongness is what God commands/forbids.
Euthyphro dilemma 3
1)pious things loved by the gods or pious because the gods love them’. 2) option 1 - morality independent of god - challenges omnipotence/authority. 3)Option 2 - morality arbitrary - why should follow gods commands if arbitrary - intuitively wrong to torture babies.
conclusion
seems morality is hard to justify having authority without god - yet from god seems faulty - morality nothing more than human invention
