Ontological argument Flashcards
for me to be logical in exam
OA
1) God by definition is greatest being that can be imagined 2) God exists as an idea 3) Being that exists in reality is better than existing in just mind 4)Thus God exists in reality
Gaunilo - perfect island
Imagine perfect island - more perfect to exist in reality than understanding - perfect island exists. Know island doesn’t exist - argument flawed.
Response to perfect island
flaws of what perfect island is - objective on what a perfect island would look like. could continually add perfections to island. Not same as argument for God.
Kants objection
OA treats existence as a property - existence is not a property things have. When specify a thing that has properties and that it exists - all saying that is that something has properties
Peter Van inwagen
Necessary existence as a property. 1) perfect being has all perfections. 2)necessary existence is a perfection - hence perfect being has necessary existence. 3)whatever has necessary existence, exists 4) Perfect being exists
Golden mountain
1) A necessarily existing golden mountains has all necessarily existing golden mountain properties 2)necessary existence is a necessarily existing golden mountain property - golden mountain has necessary existence 3)whatever has necessary existence, has existence 4)ne golden mountain exists. First premise ambiguous - properties something would have even if no golden mountain existed OR just statement true only true if such gf exists. - same argument applied to og ne argument
conclusion
og fails to prove gods existence
order
og - perfect island - perfect island flaws - kant - vingwen - golden mountain
