Calvinism
A branch of Christianity named after John Calvin with the belief in predestination and the need for the elders who ran the church to impose discipline on its members.
Predestination
The belief that an individual’s salvation was already decided by God and was not dependent on how the person lived.
Hampton Court Conference 1604
Religious conference that began the English translation of the bible into what is known as the King James Bible in 1611.
Tithe
One tenth of a parishioner’s produce, which was paid as a salary to the local clergyman.
Gunpowder Plot
A Catholic plot that was crucial in turning the country into an anti-catholic state. It may have been a government conspiracy to turn the people against Catholics.
